It was tough: we received 250 projects from around the world for this last October 31st 2006 call. We are always amazed at the quality of proposals and how they improve year by year. We have also taken into our responsibility to give constructive feedback to project submitters in order for you to continue amazing us, and gain knowledge through this process too. However, it’s a big task, so please be patient! These are the projects that have been selected for funding: | | | 1. Africa: | Niger: “Giving young girls another vision for the future” - workshops to teach young women and girls how to sew and ‘manieres’, in addition to teaching them to read and write as well as giving them a source of secure income. Egypt and Jordan: “Youth in Heart Website” – a youth-led initiative to create a youth internet portal that aims to strengthen youth relations in Arab countries. | | | 2. Asia: | China: “Urban ecology – organizing against invasive species” – group of young environmentalists have set up a project to raise awareness about invasive species in lake region. Sri Lanka: “Empowering the kids to make their villagers Green and clean” – a group of young students have set up a project to create awareness in schools about environmental issues, health and nutrition along with incorporating and adapting the Lifestyle contract. | | | 3. Europe: | Hungary: “Small funds go large for Snow Patrol” – youth volunteer to snow-shovel and to buy a snow plough to get their village out of winter isolation. Ukraine: “The first billiard club for children on a street” – youth work together to set up a youth club with a billiard table in order to get young people out of the street, bars and clubs. | | | 4. Latin America: | Peru: “Panaderia, oportunidad de trabajo y desarrollo para la ninez y juventud” – youth set up a bakery where not only will they learn new skills and train others, in addition to generating income. Brazil: “AGAPE Project – Promoting Health and Education for poor kids in Santos” – in addition to incorporating the Be the Change! Challenge’s Lifestyle Contract that will be adapted by the group for the Brazilian context. Chile: “Reparaciones Itinerantes de Bicicletas en Zonas Rurales y Urbanas” – a young eco-friendly group of bikers will go around rural and urban areas talking to people about the benefits of riding their bikes and teaching them how to fix them with little or no cost. Ecuador: “Se Pilas! / Be Clever! : Comunidad involucrandose en el manejo de desechos toxicos” – a group of university students has come together to raise awareness about the damage caused by incorrectly disposed of batteries, collect them and transform them into sculptures. |

| Thirteen new projects were funded in May out of the hundreds received from around the world. PCI staff are working hard to raise more funds so that more can be funded in October. Deadline for the next round of applications: 31st October 2006. The following are those selected for funding from over 800 received from the call for projects up to the deadline of 31st March 2006. This is the second call we have made – and we had double the number of applicants. Many are of similar quality – making it extremely hard for the youth-adult team here at Peace Child International to make a final selection.
